For our first article on product comparison, it is only fit to choose two well known rivals in the bathroom. Today, in the ring we have the traditional, petrol-made and very impactful plastic toothbrush (unchallenged in its use by the public for years), facing a rising contender, the newly designed, plant-made bamboo toothbrush. The fight is split into 2 rounds: the impact and a user opinion. After these two rounds, the jury will give his verdict…

Round 1: Impact (self-speaking facts)

Round 2: User opinion (arguments + counter-arguments from my experiences)

I have tried both and I will try to give my experience of both objectively. Everything I say is my opinion which can differ from yours. For the record, I now use a bamboo toothbrush.

Normal plastic toothbrush: You probably own one, apart if you have an electric toothbrush, so you will know what it feels when using it but I am still going to make a brief recap. Using it is quite pleasant because it is flexible and there are many different designs so you can choose exactly the type you want. However, I find sometimes that the grip can be a little annoying and itchy. Also, the perfect flexibility level is hard to find so in certain cases brushing can be less comfortable. Anyhow, the experience is generally good and the quality of the brushing satisfying (this depends on your brushing method as well of course).

Bamboo toothbrush: When I first transitioned, what really struck me was the difference of flexibility: the toothbrush, being a piece of bamboo, is a lot stiffer. Nonetheless, I got used to it after a week or so and it has not bothered me since. You might think that holding a piece of bamboo and putting it in your mouth is unpleasant or uncomfortable but once again this feeling disappears after using it a few times. Moreover, the bamboo should be smooth and I found it exactly the same as a normal toothbrush, if not better. Finally, in my case I found the head a little too thick and wide. Even though I do not pay attention to it anymore, I would recommend if you want to buy one, to choose a smaller head ( you may have to experiment to find your preference).

Verdict

The jury has decided the following: the bamboo toothbrush has managed to put the normal toothbrush in a difficult position in round 1, landing big blows because of its sustainability. Then the normal toothbrush came back into the ring with new energy in round 2 and certainly did not let itself be dominated and even won that round to a certain extent.

In a nutshell, round 1 was a clear win for the bamboo toothbrush whilst round 2 was a closer, much more even fight. Therefore, the jury has decided that the 2021 winner of the toothbrush boxing championships is . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. .. . . . .. . . . . the bamboo toothbrush!

Maybe you ought to give it a try?
